It was in the middle of holiday when LEAF came across to this interesting program “Planet In Peril: Battlelines” by CNN. Ever since this SHADOW has been started, LEAF becomes extra sensitive to these kind of issue all of a sudden. Though to LEAF, this is a good sign - a sign of revival.
With the always been hot topic – the end of the world – “Planet In Peril: Battlelines” has no exception to place it in context. Aired on 11-Dec-08, it was about global resources and the strain that the increasing population was putting on those resources. There are 6 specific stories; the one that capture LEAF’s heart most is the first one.
It is about the CNN’s chief medical correspondent Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s report on potential pandemics from diseases that start in animals and spread to people. Gupta starts with the hypothesis that AIDS was first transmitted to human from infected monkey meat in the early 1900s, where chimps and monkeys are killed for food in Africa. With lesser resources in the world compare to the expansion of population, the poor and starving Africans have no choice but start to hunt deeper into the bush and eat anything they can find to survive. It is only a matter of time before something similar or worse jumps to the human population. And in facts, it already has, in form of AIDS or other diseases, which now become the deadly killer of mankind.
LEAF does not know if Dr. Sanjay Gupta’s theory is valid, and LEAF would not want to find out how exactly AIDS started, neither by chimp nor mutated microbe. There are too many information about AIDS on the website, from history, cause, syndrome, impact to treatment, especially those explain on how AIDS virus evolve, which LEAF finds that most of them are full of biological terms that are hard to digest.
Though, there is something LEAF notice.
Human continue to dwindle natural resources in order to survive. But, will human survive? The more human destroy, the more severe consequence human need to pay for. AIDS is a sign of warning, but human seems like not going to stop. Please allow LEAF to have the idea that AIDS is another form of Ice Age which leads to the extinction of living. You never know.
So, do not narrow your mind on the reason how AIDS spread. This is not the time for you to point your finger to those homosexual people or drug users. Stop act like you have the authority to use any of the resources in this earth and claim those people that are totally responsible to this pandemic disease. If you think you are not the one who should get blame - because you are not HIV carrier or sharing syringe - do think deeply: Is it a fault of only a group of people?
