For the Ladies

Today is Oscar Day. Movie "The Hurt Locker", about a team of US Army EOD (Explosive Ordnance Disposal) in Iraq War, beat the movie Avatar soundly by disposing them in both significant area, Best Picture and Best Director. Maybe it's overshadowed by the big name of James Big Spender Cameron for his blockbuster, I didn't realize before the Best Director award was given out, that the nominee (director) is actually a woman. Little that I know, Kathryn Bigelow in real life, was once Kathryn Cameron (1989-1991). This lady, being the first in 82-year Academy Awards history to win as the Best Director, was offered some cheers and applause by the woman community. To make it even a more meaningful triumph, today is actually International Women's Day (8th of March).

Every now and then, when women's right was brought up, fairness is the big keyword to come along with it. Debates and arguments are being gone through to give a "fair" judgment call to the significance of women's contribution, as well as what the guys should do, to avoid hurting the so-called "weaker" community. Excuse me? I believe it's 10 years into the 21st century? Perhaps being a woman (I love to be called this way as this was how Sherlock Holmes called his beloved woman in life, Irene Adler) doesn't make me a perfect candidate to defend the status of our community? (What?!!! Who else does then?)

Ironically, the people that I adore in several fields, are mostly gentlemen. Roger Federer (sports), Adam Lambert (celebrity/singer), CM Leung (photography) are some "man-ly" figures even though one of them is gay and another one was rumored to be. (Excuse me) Also I don't watch women soccer, basketball and tennis. Perhaps it's the superiority of men, their competitive manners which make all of these more exciting and literally more relevant to be sports, an organized, competitive, and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play. (Thanks Wiki!)

Anyway, to be claimed as the "weaker side" has actually proven an advantage or unique status for ladies. Whenever we achieve anything big in an area which previously monopolized by men, the achievement hails monumental impact to the society.When Serena Williams beat Andy Roddick in a training match, the media blasted the guy and honored the lady. (I know what you think - Serena.... Err.....) Whenever a lady photographer emerged as a winner in a prestigious international competition, she would be glorified as a BIG Star among the community. These are all because of the weaker citation, comes the more prodigious salutation.

For that reason, Ladies, it's almost irrational of moaning because you are labeled as the Weaker Side and Guys, I think being the dominant may eventually hurt a little, no? (Wink)
